Dear Tessa, family and friends of Tom,
On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at Tom´s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow “Bubblehead” departs on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor on the USS Hardhead SS-365, USS Francis Scott Key SSBN-657, USS Trepang SSN-674, USS Howard W. Gilmore AS-16, USS George C. Marshall SSBN-654, and as Commanding Officer on three boats: USS Sam Rayburn SSBN-635, USS Augusta SSN-710 and USS Georgia SSBN-729.
To our “Brother-of-the-Phin” we say, “Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas.” Thank you for your service to our country.
Tessa and family… “may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you.” 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV).

Served under Captain Turner onboard Sam Rayburn after shipyard. He and his first wife Marge (RIP) bowled with me and my wife during offcrew. Nobody else wanted to bowl with the new CO. Great CO. Good friend for many years. Renlisted me onboard Nautilus when I rolled to shore duty. My wife was the Ombudsman. Got two stories family might enjoy. If they reach out via e-mail. Or (830) 285-7607. Rest in peace with the Commander in Chief. Rest your oars sailor we have the watch! SALUTE!

As one of the men who served under Captain Turner on the USS Sam Rayburn, I would like to say what an honor and privilege to have known him. He was a unique individual and will be missed by all of us who served under him.

I had the privilege of working closely with Tom over 50 years ago during the construction and testing of the USS Trepang at the Electric Boat shipyard. He was the Trepang’s Engineering Officer and I an Electric Boat Nuclear Test Engineer. We spent many shifts working together to complete dockside and sea trial reactor system testing prior to commissioning. From knowing him then I am not surprised to learn of his impressive Navy career. My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Captain Turner on his passing from this world..

I had the pleasure of serving under Captain Turner as part of the Pre-Commissioning Unit through Commissioning of the USS Augusta SSN-710. As an enlisted man I had a great deal of respect for him as my Commanding Officer and as he had a great deal of respect for all his men in service and as human beings. Tom was one of the “good ones”. I am blessed to have known him and was an example that many of could surely learn from.
