Phyllis A. Stadtwald

Phyllis Annetta Stadtwald

June 4, 1931 ~ November 29, 2024

Age 93

Phyllis was born on June 4, 1931 in Omaha, Nebraska. Apart from a year when her father was at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, she grew up and went to school in Omaha. She enjoyed summers with her sister Marilyn at their Aunt Ethel’s farm in Iowa.

Phyllis was a life-long Christian. She met Werner while attending the Omaha Gospel Tabernacle, and they married on August 6, 1950 in Arnold’s Park, Iowa. The wedding took place in the “Summer Tabernacle” that Werner and his father William’s construction company built as the new permanent worship space for the Okoboji Lakes Bible and Missionary Conference held there every summer. A speed boat spirited them across the lake to where their car lay hidden and safe from promised mischief by Werner’s friends and coworkers.

Phyllis’ first career was Mom for their four children. She loved children, and so was active at school functions, honored with lifetime PTA membership, and taught Sunday School. When her youngest entered high school, she started a second career at Kinder Care Learning Center where she worked for over thirty years teaching four-year-olds.

Above all Phyllis loved spending time with family, but also enjoyed such activities as

Reading “cozy-crime” novels related to places and past-times of literary murders—bakeries, scrapbooking, knitting, and tea shops.

Doing jigsaw puzzles; she usually had one going all the time. When working one on her kitchen table, she would cover it with a tablecloth for meals. The difficult patches often made her exclaim that “none of these pieces fit.”

Enjoying flowers and her garden, and watching butterflies and birds particularly hummingbirds, cardinals, and the fantail of New Zealand.

Exploring garage sales and antique shops determined to find a bargain or negotiate for one.

Traveling beyond Nebraska to Colorado, the Southwest, California, Alaska, New England, North Carolina, Austria, England, Turkey, Canada, and New Zealand. Trips to New Zealand introduced her to many new adventures including ziplining in the treetops of Rotorua.

Phyllis’s inspiration as mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend is as lovingly remembered by many as her loss is deeply felt.

Preceded in death by her husband Werner; son William Stadtwald; parents Halston and Velma Chandler

Survived by her children Annetta Richards (Rodger), Kurt Stadtwald (Sharon), Rebecca Demchick (Paul); grandchildren Jennifer, Jeffery (Catherine), William, Emily (Jordan), Margaret (Tyler) and Hal; great granddaughter Phoebe; siblings Marilyn Weldin, Janelle Springer (Harvey), Robert Chandler; many nieces and nephews.
