Louise Irwin Burmeister

Louise Irwin Burmeister

September 11, 1935 ~ March 19, 2025

Age 89

Louise was born on September 11, 1935 to Opal and Anna (Alley) Irwin in Clarinda, Iowa.  She was the youngest of six children (3 brothers, 2 sisters).  Her father remarried when she was a baby and she had another 6 half-brothers and 3 half-sisters.  Louise lived on a farm in Malvern, Iowa and attended country school through 6th grade. She loved reading, playing outside in the barn, outdoor games and taking care of the animals and helping with chores in the kitchen.  Living on a small farm with lots of siblings always gave her something to do.  After the country school closed, she then attended school in Malvern. At 14 years old, Louise moved to Council Bluffs and lived in rooming houses while going to school during the day and working as a waitress at night.  She worked very hard at school and supported herself during this time.  She graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School then met Stan Burmeister through mutual friends.  They married in 1953 and raised their family in Bellevue.  She was the mother of five children (losing a daughter in infancy and an adult daughter to cancer), grandmother of twelve (losing a grandson), and great-grandmother of eleven.  She worked as a secretary for defense contractors at Offutt Air Base and the Army Corp of Engineers downtown Omaha. Louise was a master at “shorthand” and kept the teams running smoothly. She also worked in the office at Bellevue High School where she enjoyed being near her children.  Louise was involved in Avery Church, children’s ministry, 4-H, Campfire Girls, Order of the Eastern Star and loved to support all her family’s events with school, sports and other activities over the four generations.

Louise’s favorite time and place was spring/summer in her backyard and garden where she crafted beautiful flowers, vegetables, and bird habitats. She and Stan were married for 50 years before his passing.  Together they loved to travel by car visiting lots of family and friends or just exploring antique stores and small towns.  Most of all she had a genuine faith and relationship with God.  She enjoyed early morning quiet devotional time and lived everyday with unwavering love and kindness for others.

Louise is preceded in death by her parents Opal and Anna Irwin; stepmother Darlene Irwin; husband Stanley Burmeister; infant daughter Julie Burmeister; daughter Brenda Gibson; grandson Benjamin Carlson; son-in-law Dennis Mills.

She is survived by her daughters Debra Burmeister and Ginny (Michael) Kraus; son Scot (Angi) Burmeister; eleven grandchildren Dawn (Travis) Ayala; Gabriel (Ali) Carlson; Ryan (Ashly) Chaplin; Jackson Gibson; Kelly (Cam) Guthrie; Kelsey Kraus; Kyle Kraus; Keri Kraus; Cole Burmeister; Alexa Burmeister; Travis Burmeister; eleven great-grandchildren; siblings and many nieces and nephews.
