Kalani John Herbert Zalopany
November 19, 2002 ~ October 12, 2020
Age 17
Kalani was a senior at Bellevue East High School preparing for graduation and an adult life that had great potential.
He was born in Honolulu and spent 12 years of his life there. Kalani was proud of his Hawaiian heritage. His Hawaiian name means “The Heavens” or “The Royal One.” He attended Star of the Sea School in Honolulu and graduated from 8th grade there. At 6 foot 5 inches, Kalani loved basketball and played on several teams. His Hawaii coaches and teammates loved him. He was known for being a devoted fan of the Chicago Bulls. He also studied jujitsu for four years.
Kalani was known for his kindness, generosity, charm, keen wit, devotion to family and friends, and his great sense of humor. He was always a protector since he was a youngster – his whole life he watched over his family and his many, many friends, and he was always ready to stick up for them and defend them.
Kalani was so much loved by his family and friends and there will not be a day when we don’t think of our son, grandson, brother, nephew and friend. Our hearts will be with him always.
Kalani is survived by his mother Kuuleilani Zalopany; father Cory Brummel; siblings Kaniela Zalopany, La’akea, Lopaka and Russell Gage, and Taylor, River, Te’a and Riley Brummel; grandparents Michael Zalopany, Susan Kreifels, Cathy Sage, John Brummel, and Lyn Wolford; great-grandfather Vince Sage; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family requests that masks be worn and social distancing be observed.
