Gerald Lyle Anderson TSgt USAF (Ret)

Gerald Lyle Anderson, 92, of Bellevue, Nebraska, passed away peacefully of natural causes on Wednesday Feb. 21st. He was an Air Force retiree and a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Gerald was the son of Carla (Strand) and James O Anderson. He was born in Nome, North Dakota on June 12, 1931.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Dale, Donald, Eugene, and Richard; sister Pearlene; grandson Ian; and survived by siblings Carol, James Jr, Janice, Ronald, Sandra, and Shirley.

He is survived by his wife, Betty (Carlson) of Bellevue; his sons Kenneth (Pat) of Dickinson, North Dakota; William (Cindy) of Lubbock, Texas; Donald (Thao) of Newnan, Georgia; Robert (Cyndi) of Hewitt, Texas; and Thomas of Bellevue. He is also survived by grandchildren Julia of Dickinson; Adam of Lubbock; Austin (Angela) of West Virginia; Donna of Santa Barbara, California; Daniel of Newnan, Georgia; Holly (Eric) Bender of Houston, Texas; Nathan (Kristen) of Waco, Texas; Reece (Megan) of Spring, Texas; Paige of Leavenworth, Kansas; Eric of Bellevue; and great-grandchildren Jase, Caleb, and Amelia.

Gerald was a hard worker all his life until the onset of dementia made him slow down. As a youngster he assisted with chores on his family and grandparents’ farms. At the age of 13 he left home to work on a neighbor’s farm and used his earnings to support his parents and younger siblings. He was especially known for how well he worked with and loved his farm animals. As a young teen he could handle any farm animal and was already driving tractors and grain trucks in support of planting and harvest.

In 1952 Gerald, along with his brother Eugene and cousin Merrill, joined the Air Force to volunteer for the Korean war effort. He retired from the Air Force in 1974 after many years of faithful service. After retirement Gerald and his wife Betty successfully ran a multi-purpose cleaning business in Bellevue for over 40 years. He served as an elder for many years at the Bellevue Church of Christ.

In his later years, he enjoyed reading about history, especially North Dakota history, walking for exercise, the Bible, doing crossword puzzles, and Sudoku. He was well known for avoiding TV as much as possible, preferring to read or do puzzles. He also enjoyed recalling events during his time growing up in North Dakota, working on Mr. Herb Lindemann’s farm, and interesting stories about his brothers, sisters, and friends.

Gerald over the years loved and took extremely good care of his dogs Pal, Spot, Sugar, Rocky, Henry, and Elsa.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 2nd at Bellevue Memorial Funeral Chapel located at 2202 Hancock St. Bellevue Nebraska, 68005. Burial will be in the spring at St. Petri Lutheran Church Cemetery in Nome, North Dakota.

    Dear Betty and and sons,
    Our family was very fond of Gerald’s family over the years. He will be missed by all of us who knew him. Larry and I have always been so proud of our association with all of his sons: Ken, Bill, Don, Robert and Tom. We are proud to call Robert our son-in-law. and the father of Nathan, Holly and Reece.
    I love you all.
    In Christian love,

    Dear Betty and family,
    We had good memories of our family times with Gerald, you and the boys. I know Gerald had to be very proud of Ken, Bill, Don, Robert and Tom. And, we are so proud that Robert is a part of our family and has given both you and us such wonderful grandchildren. I know you will miss Gerald;
    however, we both can look forward to spending eternity someday with our husbands. I love all of you and will have the family in my prayers.
    In Christian love.
    Kittie Yates
