Dr. Ronald D. Stevens, DVM
March 11, 1934 – March 29, 2021
Age 87
Ron grew up in Red Cloud, NE, and graduated from Red Cloud High School. He married Janet Baker on January 29, 1954. He served 1953-1955 in the Army, including a tour in Korea. After his discharge from the Army he attended Colorado State University Veterinarian School in Fort Collins, CO, earning his Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine.
Ron and his family moved to Plainview, NE, where he had a large and small animal practice. He enjoyed working with the farmers and pet owners for 21 years. After he left practice he worked as an animal nutrition consultant for Vit-e-Min Company. He moved to Bellevue, NE, to work as a Supervisory Veterinarian with the USDA. After retirement Ron and Janet settled in Holdrege, NE.
While Ron served in Korea he volunteered at an orphanage working with the children. Ron always enjoyed being involved in the community. In Plainview he was a member of the Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce, and Community Theater. While living in Bellevue he volunteered as a Docent at the Henry Doorley Zoo. He also became a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) for Sarpy County, helping young people and their families. After their move to Holdrege Ron continued his work as a CASA volunteer for the Phelps/Harlan counties. He also became a board member of the Holdrege Senior Citizen Center and delivered Meals on Wheels with his wife.
He loved his God, his wife, his family, and his country. He always had a big smile, a listening ear, a funny story, and hug that felt like home.
Preceded in death by parents Harvey & Blanche Stevens; siblings Marilyn, Carrol, and Wendell Stevens.
Survived by wife of 67 years, Janet; daughters Laura Horak (Michael) and Mary Lynn Pumphrey (David); grandchildren Matthew Horak (Kathy), Stephanie Amador, Gabriel Stevens (Laura), Jarred Newill (Julie), Eva Krueger (Ryan), and David Pumphrey (Molly); 13 great-grandchildren; sister Artis Ramey.
Funeral Service following CDC guidelines: Wednesday, April 7, 11:00 a.m., at Bellevue Memorial Chapel, with a visitation one hour prior.

Dick & I are thinking about you. If possible I will try to see you Saturday after the cemetery service. We had several nice visits when you lived here. Great neighbors and friends.
