Denzil E. McCollum MSgt USAF (Ret)

April 8, 1930 ~ July 4, 2019

Age 89

Denzil Earl McCollum, 89, from Bellevue, NE, joined his late wife Delores on July 4, 2019. They were married for 65 years until her passing on January 22, 2017. Denzil is survived by his seven children, Charles (Denise) McCollum of Fredericksburg, VA, Cynthia Oliver, of Indianapolis, IN, Lawrence (Tammy) McCollum of Hannibal, MO, Lewis (September) McCollum of Council Bluffs, IA, Sandra McCollum of Omaha, NE, Steven (Kari) McCollum of Appleton, WI, and Michele McCollum of Omaha, NE, fourteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by wife Delores, parents Charley and Anna Maye McCollum, and sister Mary Marie McCollum.

Denzil had a twenty-one year career in the US Air Force with assignments in Wyoming, Nebraska, Utah, Texas, Louisiana, Pennsylvania and Georgia, and overseas assignments in Greenland, France, South Korea, Japan, and Thailand. He started a second career with the US Postal Service after his USAF retirement, working as a clerk in various stations and branches of the Omaha Post Office. He retired a second time in 1990.

He and Delores spent winters in their RV “down in the valley” at Donna, Texas. They loved to travel and spend time with family and friends. That time was usually spent trying to fix something or tinkering with some new bauble. When old age hobbled their travel plans, they enriched themselves by lunching at their favorite places, where their sandwiches were made when they were spotted coming in the door. Friday nights were game nights at Delores’ sister’s (Rosemary Mapes) house where cards and Mexican train were played.
