Debra K. Helmick

July 13, 1954 – April 15, 2021

Debra “Deb” Helmick, 66, formerly of Gering, NE, passed away on April 15, 2021, at the home of her daughter in Bellevue, NE, surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with breast cancer.

Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 23, 2021, at Hotel 21 & Co. in Gering, NE, with Reverend Tim Hebbert officiating. Donations will be collected and the family will be donating in Deb’s name to breast cancer research. Also, we would like to remind everyone to get their scheduled mammograms in memory of our Momma.

Deb was born in Scottsbluff, NE, on July 13, 1954, to Harvey and Dorothy (Hamburg) Hergenreder. She graduated from Scottsbluff High School and from there Deb went on to nursing school, obtaining her degree in 1985. Deb worked at multiple nursing locations throughout the Scottsbluff area and midwest for over 35 years. She was passionate about her work and had an uncanny ability to care for others.

Deb married and was later divorced, but from that union, had five of the greatest children. She then met Robert “Bill” Helmick and they were married March 3, 2000. Together, they “funded” the local keno industry, since it would never pay as Deb would believe! Gambling and Keno were some of Deb’s favorite hobbies to include multiple trips to Las Vegas and Prairie Winds Casino. She loved sitting outside with a glass of wine, enjoyed time with her dogs, family vacations and trips to the stores. It is believed that she tolerated her children, but adored her grandchildren more than anything. Deb was an absolute blessing to her family and will be dearly missed, as she was loved by all. By the way, we hope that you are winning at Keno with Granny and Gramps.

Preceded in death by parents Harvey & Dorothy Hergenreder; grandson Connor.

Survived by husband of 21 years Robert “Bill” Helmick; children Mark Wheeler (Arnhild) of Villmar, Germany, Chris Wheeler (Denise) of Cheyenne, WY, Melissa Mann (Andy) of Bellevue, NE, Brian Wheeler (Tonya) of Scottsbluff, NE, and Stephanie Anderson (Johnny) of Bellevue, NE; stepsons Christopher Helmick and Robert Helmick, Jr., both of Hope, AR; grandchildren Delia, Ronja, Tristan, Christopher, Aaron, Josh, Michael, Jaden (Valerie), Taylor, Trinity, Brantley, Aliyana, Caleb, and Kayden; great-granddaughter Feline; siblings Bob Hergenreder (Jeannie) of Scottsbluff, NE, Pam Allen (Scott) of Arvada, CO, Cindy Yekel (Roger) of Ft. Collins, CO, and Sherry Weimer (Doug) of Gering, NE; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
