Charles J. Garfield, Jr.

Charles J. Garfield, Jr.

February 6, 1949 – April 25, 2022

Age 73

Husband, father and grandfather, Charles J. Garfield, Jr. died peacefully at his home early in the morning of Monday, April 25th.  Charlie was a South Omaha boy at heart, attending Edward Rosewater Elementary and growing up living in the shadows of Rosenblatt stadium, where he worked his first job as a boy.  He valued his Catholic faith, serving as an altar boy at St. Rose Parish. He worked as a bus boy at Marchio’s Italian Restaurant to pay his tuition to attend Ryan High School, graduating in 1967.

Upon graduation, Charlie served in the Army National Guard as a Combat Engineer.  His service formed the foundation of his passion – serving our Omaha Veteran Community in the American Legion Post 331.  He worked his way up through the ranks of the Post 331 E-board, eventually serving as Post Commander as well as in numerous District and State positions.

Anyone who knew Charlie was quick to spot his better half, the love of his life, his wife Mary.  The two married in 1972 and were inseparable for the next 50 years – they were truly best friends.  His legacy lives on with his three sons, Chuck, Jeff, and Jeremy.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 50 years Mary; sons Charles J. Garfield III (Laura), Jeffrey Garfield (Meghan), and Jeremy J. Garfield (Tiffany); grandchildren Charles IV, Clarissa, Kara, Emily, Jackson, and Brandon; siblings Lori Symonsbergen (Rick), David Garfield (Kantanan), and Bob Garfield (Shawn).

Preceded in death by his parents Charles, Sr. and Delores Garfield.

Charlie was a great guy. We went to the same Grade school and the High school. I have a lot of memories of him and the guys who all hung out around 13th street. Not really a gang but a sizable group of guys with a great deal of comradery. When my Dad died and the Air Force and Navy, both told me they didn’t have time or the personnel to give a Navy World War Two Vet the proper military honors he had earned, Charlie stepped up and made sure that Dad had a proper Military Funeral. For that, I will always be grateful to him. Everybody liked Charlie and you would be hard-pressed to find anyone that ever had a harsh word for him. What a great guy and he will be missed by all of us who were touched by his kindness.
