Channon Irene McKay

July 20, 1951 ~ June 2, 2022

Age 70

Channon was a creative soul, whose expressiveness was reflected in all parts of life.

An accomplished cosmetologist of 45 years, Channon worked as a hair stylist for models with the renowned Paul Mitchell, and went on to own two businesses in the industry. Over the years she developed a loyal clientele. She loved fashion, with her unique sense of style earning the nickname ‘Glamma’, and later ‘Glammy’ among her grandchildren.

And her spirited preferences went beyond a vibrant sense of dress. Every year she selected new varieties of flowers for her garden. Her walls are adorned with artistic decor and family photos. Holidays saw her home transform into elaborate themed set pieces where festive foods were served and games played. Always colorful in personality and taste, the peacock became the decorative symbol of her household.

At no time was her creativity more apparent than in planning events for her family. Birthdays were always remarkable events complete with party favors, games, treats, decorations, gifts, and a theme to tie it all together. No one could celebrate like Channon, especially when her grandkids were involved. She lived to bring joy to her loved ones.

Among all of her qualities, generosity was one of the most prominent. Close family recalls fondly the ‘Bottomless Christmas’, when after opening presents for much of the morning, two young grandkids became too physically exhausted to get through all of their gifts, and had to take a nap before finishing the rest.

Channon cared deeply for animals, and spoiled any pups who were lucky enough to befriend her. On one family trip to Lake Ericson, she met a hungry stray dog, covered with ticks. This dog sensed a rare opportunity in Channon. By the time he was fed and nursed to health, they were best friends. Buddy took up permanent residence with Channon, and lived a long, healthy life as her favorite dog.

One of Channon’s favorite activities was travel, especially to places with turquoise waters. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s swim lessons and performing various science experiments with them.

Channon was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.  She was a cosmetologist for forty-five years and owned two salons in different locations. She considered herself fortunate to have developed a loyal clientele who followed her for many years.

Preceded in death by her father Millard “Buck” Buckingham; mother Mildred Chapman; brother Collin Buckingham.

Survived by her husband of 35 years Tim; son Jerrid McKay (Sarah); grandchildren Joel and Ayla; sister Dominie Chapman.

The family will be gathering with friends on Saturday, June 18, from 10:00 a.m. – noon, with a Celebration of Channon’s Life beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Bellevue Memorial Funeral Chapel.

I am heartbroken. Channon was one of my oldest and dearest friends. She was my stylist for over 35 years and when I lived in Chicago I would fly home for appointments with her. She did my mom’s and my hair during the pandemic in my mom’s kitchen. That was the type of person she was— thoughtful, generous and always willing to help. She was one of the best people I know. She had a heart of gold and was kind to a fault. The world has lost a bright light, and my heart goes out to her grandchildren, especially Joel.

    Tim,
I am in Italy and just received your email. I am heartbroken over the news and will grieve the loss of Chanon’s warmth and loving friendship . She was the best kind of friend,; always a sympathetic ear, a laugh that could raise you up when your spirit was low, and a generous spirit who would help with any problem. She was special. very special. I will pray that she is with those loved ones who wait for her as well as her 4 legged furry children. I will pray that God gives you the strength to continue and the comfort that all of your memories of your years together will sustain you. God bless you and the grandchildren she loved so much.

    Tim and family,
Channon was a very dear friend to us. I went to her for my hair just before my wedding, that was 51 years ago. We have shared good times and bad times together. She always understood and was very loving about things. She could lift your spirits and make you feel better. She was very proud of her family. Channon was an Angel on earth.

Channon was a true artist who freely shared her giftedness with others and did it from her heart. I had the honor to know her for over 40 years. No matter what she was going through, or how much personal pain, she made room in her heart to listen and care for others. A beautiful soul in every way! Thanks for touching my life. You’ve gotten your wings now, Channon—fly free!
