Hampton, Artis T. “Tommy”

April 16, 1950 – October 9, 2018

Age  68

Artis Thomas Hampton, Jr., of Bellevue, Nebraska,  departed this life and entered the arms of our loving God on October 9, 2018.

Referred to as “Tommy”, he was born to Artis T. Hampton, Sr. and Elizabeth B. (Caddell) Hampton in Lake City, Arkansas. His parents, along with Fred H. and Frances Carter, taught Tommy Christian values and were instrumental in leading him to Jesus Christ. Under the leadership of Rev. F. H. Davis of the Lake Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Tommy was baptized in the St. Francis River in 1958.

Tommy graduated from Jonesboro High School in 1968, one of the first integrated classes to graduate from the educational institution in the city of Jonesboro, Arkansas.  Motivated to pursue higher education, Tommy entered Arkansas State University majoring in Music Performing Arts and sang in the concert choir. Tommy entered the Air Force in 1970 where he played trumpet and vocals with the Air Force Show Band.

On August 22, 1969, Tommy was united to his wife, Mary Ida, with whom a union of 42 years was shared. To this union was born Angela Hampton. Tommy was also the proud grandfather to Anthony Hampton and was honored to be called “Grandpa”.

Tommy leaves to cherish his loving memory, one loving daughter, Angela of Bellevue, and a beloved grandson, Anthony.  Tommy is also survived by sisters Al-Fredia Hampton, Gayle Hampton Olvera, both of Jonesboro, Arkansas; Ruth Sills of Atlanta, Georgia; one brother, Bruce Sills of Jonesboro, Arkansas; a multitude of cousins, nieces and nephews, friends, co-workers and church family.

His siblings say “Tommy was charismatic and he was our first born, our chief, our treasure and champion. The love we shared with one another lives on forevermore.”

I am so saddened by the loss of poppa Tommy. He guided me through my difficult journey that was my 20s. Gave me more advice than I knew I needed, and I have looked to him for strength more times than I can count. He was ALWAYS there. No matter if we agreed or not, he was there. I will miss you, more than you know and I will never forget the difference you made in my life. I love you. Many prayers and continued blessings to Angela & Anthony as they continue their walk without his earthly presence. I’m so glad the angels are welcoming you to the arms of our Lord and back to the arms of your loving Mary.

I have felt blessed to have had an opportunity to meet Tommy and family way back in the 60’s on a bus ride between Memphis and Jonesboro . And then to have the chance to reconnect in 2013.
Tommy was a huge inspiration in my life then and now. He will be truly missed. Blessings old friend.

I will always remember the love you showed to me. Even when that wasn’t easy to do. In my mind’s eye, I see your smile and hear the sound of your voice. Thank you for leaving our family history for me to share with the younger generations. They will be told from whence they came. I love you always. Gayle

I only knew Tommy for a short time but this was more than enough to realize how special and inspirational he was to me and others. He will be missed and thought of often.

You have been such a blessing to me. I thank you for your preaching, your teaching & your songs. Thank you so much for sharing your love of Christ. Truly a man of GOD your light shone brightly to all. You led the “Christ” life. I’m honored & humble our paths crossed. You touched so many lives. You will be missed yet your legacy will continue through the lives you have touched. I shall remember your signature hat, your wide smile & linger wirds: “Let me share JESUS with you. Rest my pastor, pain free, you’re with Jesus now for eternity. Jesus is Real…
